Benchmarking is used to compare the performance of individual plants with the energy efficient plant(s) on a sector-by-sector basis. Energy benchmarking is part of a much wider use of benchmarking as a management tool (UNIDO, 2010). In order to make proper comparisons, system boundaries, definitions and units used are need to be uniform. Resource consumption indicators, sectoral benchmarking, equipment/process specific benchmarking are useful tools to compare and workout saving potential but they are just guiding tool. Industrial energy use indicators can serve as the basis for identifying promising areas by sub-sector, region and technology to improve efficiency. Benchmarks for upcoming facilities and the retrofit and refurbishment of existing industrial facilities are also covered in this study.
